Update: Maurice Smith continues to lead decathlon
Maurice Smith is well on course to win Jamaica’s 13th gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
With one discipline remaining in the men’s decathlon, Smith has amassed 7467 points, 591 ahead of nearest rival Steven Merrero of Puerto Rico on 6876. Marcos Sanchez, also of Puerto Rico, is third with 6792 points.
The final discipline of the decathlon, the 1500 metres is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, the women’s long jump final featuring Jamaican Jovanne Jarrett is in progress.
Darrell Garwood of Jamaica is also contesting a medal round, the men’s high jump final, which starts a few minutes ago.
Jamaica will also be represented in the men and women’s 4 by 400-metre finals tonight.
In Basketball, Jamaica’s men team defeated Panama 83-64 in the playoff for fifth and sixth place. Andre Smith led Jamaica with a game-high 28 points, while Garfield Johns chipped in with 19.
In Hockey, Jamaica’s women team finished sixth after going down 1-0 to Guyana in the playoff for fifth and sixth place.
Jamaica’s have so far mined 38 medals at the games, including 12 gold, nine silver and 17 bronze.
