T&T dethrone Jamaica of one day title
Jamaica’s youth cricketers are scheduled to arrive from the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 tournament in St Lucia this afternoon, after failing to defend the three-day and one-day titles.
The squad is down to arrive at the Norman Manley International Airport at 12.40pm.
Nine days after they were dethroned of the three-day title by Windward Islands, Jamaica lost the one-day crown to Trinidad and Tobago yesterday.
Jamaica and T&T recorded victories in yesterday’s final round of matches.
Jamaica’s efforts, however, were not enough as their four-wicket win over Barbados at Dennery Playing Field took them to 10 points, four behind T&T, who beat Guyana by five wickets at Beauchamp Playing Field to end on 14 points.
John Campbell’s belligerent half-century piloted Jamaica to victory.
The dashing 16-year-old left-hander slammed a stroke-filled 77 from just 56 balls, which propelled Jamaica to 238 for six, overhauling Barbados’ 236 for nine, from their allotted 43 overs.
Sent in after play started an hour and a half late because of wet conditions at the Dennery Playing field, Barbados got a superb knock of 92 from Kyle Mayers and a patient innings of 44 from captain, Kraigg Brathwaite, to reach their eventual total.
They were undermined, however, by leg-spinner Donovan Nelson, who claimed a brilliant six for 33 to lead Jamaica’s attack.
The T&T, Guyana game was reduced to a Twenty20 affair.
Heavy overnight and early morning rain, resulted in a wet outfield and delayed the start of play, forcing umpires to trim the overs to 20 per side.
Winning the toss and batting first, Guyana racked up a paltry 78 all out off 19.1 overs, before T&T sprinted to 82 for five with four and a half overs remaining to seal the championship.
Over at Gros Islet Playing Field, the Leeward Islands beat Windward Islands by 149 runs in the day’s other match.
