Haiti's ex-PM nominated for polls

Haiti’s ousted ex-prime minister, Jacques-Edouard Alexis, has been nominated by the ruling party to contest the upcoming Presidential elections in November.

Alexis was fired by the Senate in 2008, over riots caused by rising food prices.

He was nominated at a meeting of the recently formed Unity party of President Rene Preval.

However, analysts say the backing of the incumbent party could push his prospects ahead of hip hop star Wyclef Jean, who is expected to announce his candidacy soon.

The winner of the November poll will be tasked with rebuilding the capital that was destroyed by the January 12 earthquake, and finding shelter for an estimated $1.6 million people left homeless.
