The hurricane research team at the Colorado State University says its keeping its forecast for this year of 10 hurricanes.

Five are expected to develop into major storms.

So far the season has produced three tropical storms, one of which grew to hurricane strength.

The team had said the six month season would likely see 18 named tropical storms, unchanged from its June prediction.

However, the season is just approaching its traditional busy phase, which runs from mid-August to October.

Meanwhile, the weather forecasters say there is a 64 per cent chance that a major hurricane will make landfall in the Caribbean and Central America.
