Lawyer threatens legal action for Cuban dissidents

A lawyer representing six of the 20 Cuban dissidents who arrived in Spain last month is threatening legal action unless Madrid grants them political asylum.

Fernando Vizcaino says he’s also seeking a meeting with political parties to find out if there is reason for his clients not being granted political asylum.

Mr. Vizcaino says his clients want refugee status to make it clear that they were political prisoners in Havana.

Last month Spain accepted the 20 dissidents after helping to broker a deal between the Cuban government and the Roman Catholic Church to gradually free 52 detainees.

The other 32 are to remain in Havana or leave for the United States.
