St Lucia government to set up enquiry into prison break

The St Lucian government has announced the setting up of an inquiry into a prison break on the weekend.

On Sunday, men with high powered weapons stormed the Bordelais Correctional Facility, where they engaged prison staff in a fierce gun battle.

During the incident, three convicts, two Venezuelans serving time on drugs charges and a St Lucian on weapons charges, managed to escape from the facility.

The government says it plans to seek help from Venezuela to undertake the investigation.

The escape has caused embarrassment for the authorities, given that the prison is a modern one, having been built in 2003.

Senior government minister Rufus Bousquet said the minister of national security had recently updated the cabinet on the security weaknesses at the jail.
