Tougher immigration laws for Florida

Florida's Attorney General Bill McCollum is promising to introduce new immigration laws which could become the toughest in the country.

The south east of Florida is a major hub for Caribbean and Latin American immigrants.

McCollum has called for the police to check the status of suspected illegal immigrants while enforcing other laws.

He also wants to give judges more powers when sentencing illegal immigrants.

Businesses in Florida would also have to check the status of all new employees.

Similar legislation introduced in Arizona in July was blocked hours before it was due to come into force.
