Bahamian Prime Minister, Hubert Ingraham has announced his government’s plans to provide social relief to help low-income families.

Ingraham, who is also the island’s Minister of Finance, also disclosed plans to eliminate import duty and stamp tax on some food items and pay increases for public officers and teachers.

To address the rising cost of utilities, Ingraham declared a two-year suspension on customs duty of 10 percent and stamp duty of 7 percent on the country’s fuel imports.

The Ingraham-led government, which is just over one year old, also announced an increase in the allocation for the Department of Social Services.
