The governments of Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago are to sign an agreement on the development of gas fields on their common maritime border, after years of negotiation.

According to Trinidad's Energy Minister Caroline Seepersad-Bachan the deal will be signed in Caracas today with Venezuelan counterpart Ali Rodriguez.

It covers fields which are estimated to contain 10 trillion cubic feet of gas.

The signing comes at a time when Trinidad and Tobago is looking for fresh energy resources in the face of a steady decline in its gas reserves.
