Haiti waits for would-be president's list

Haiti's provisional electoral council is scheduled to decide today which of the 34 candidates will be on the presidential ballot for the November 28 election.

Among those who have been registered are former Prime Ministers Yvon Neptune and Edourd Alexis, former cabinet minister Leslie Voltaire and the hip hop star Wyclef Jean.

Some analysts say there is tension and uncertainty in the country ahead of the release of the list.

Nine of the candidates, including Wycliffe, face questions about whether they meet the qualifications to run for president.

Meanwhile, some opposition groups have refused to participate in the presidential and also legislative vote, calling instead for strikes and the dismissal of the council.
