CARICOM Ambassadors to drive action

Leader of the Caribbean Community, CARICOM, member-countries have agreed to establish a Council of Ambassadors to lead the effective implementation of the bloc’s decisions to deepen the regional integration movement.

CARICOM chairman and Jamaica's Prime Minister Bruce Golding told reporters he hoped the new mechanism would be approved when the regional leaders meet later this year.

He said some countries already have the mechanism for the implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy obligation.

Golding was speaking after chairing the one-day meeting of the CARICOM sub-committee on Governance in Grenada yesterday.

According to him, the jobs of the ambassadors would be to follow up to make sure that domestic action is taken to give effect to the decisions of the regional heads.

Yesterday's meeting followed concerns at the recent CARICOM Summit that there was a need to improve the governance of the body and to advance plans to review the organization of the institutions of the bloc as well as the secretariat.
