St Lucia signs on to ICC

St Lucia has now ratified the 1998 Rome Statute to become the 113th party to sign on to the International Criminal Court.

The body is the world’s first permanent court tasked with trying people accused of the most serious offences, such as genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

It has welcomed Saint Lucia’s decision, calling it a new sign of the international community’s commitment to putting an end to exemption from penalty for the perpetrators of the most serious crimes.

The Statute will take effect in St Lucia on November 1.

Just over a week ago Seychelles also ratified the pact.

Other Caribbean countries that are party to the International Criminal Court include Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Guyana, St Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.
