Police in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam have withdrawn training and aid programmes for Suriname following the election of Desi Bouterse as the President of the CARICOM member nation.

Bouterse is a two-time coup leader, who was convicted in absentia of drug trafficking in the Netherlands, Suriname's former colonial power.

A spokesman for the Amsterdam police force told the Associated Press that the police chief had taken the decision to cut ties.

The Dutch Justice Minister is to decide whether to support or rescind it.
