Guyana's police chief, Henry Greene, has confirmed that attractive gold prices are fuelling armed attacks on mining camps in the country's interior.

He says these prices are drawing criminals to mining areas under the guise of being workers.

Gold is currently fetching more than US$1,200 per ounce on the world market.
