The police in Freeport, Bahamas, have charged three people in connection with the death of a Jamaican and two Haitians that resulted from a speedboat capsizing in Bahamian waters a week ago.

The police say the suspects, who were not identified in the report, were seen early last week in Freeport, two days after the 24-foot red-and-white speedboat was spotted northwest of Grand Bahama Island.

Police did not release the names of the Jamaican and Haitians but autopsies performed on the remains of the two males and one female indicated that the three had drowned.

The authorities believe that they were being transported as part of a human-smuggling operation.

Bahamian officials say they are checking reports that a fifth person may have been on the boat.

Last month, at least 20 Haitians were reportedly killed when their boat capsized on a trip from Nassau, Bahamas, to Florida.
