Tiger Woods has been named in the United States Ryder Cup team to play Europe at Celtic Manor next month.

Captain Corey Pavin chose the world number one as one of his four wildcard picks, along with Stewart Cink, Zach Johnson and Rickie Fowler.

Woods says it's great to be a part of the team and he is honoured.

Europe captain Colin Montgomerie says he is delighted to see Tiger Woods amongst Corey's selections as the Ryder Cup is a better event with him in it.

Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, Jeff Overton and Matt Kuchar were already in the 12-man team.

The United States selection race ended after the USPGA in August, which was won by Germany's Martin Kaymer.

The 34-year-old Woods finished 12th in the Ryder Cup standings after coming joint 28th at Whistling Straits.

However, his form has improved lately, with the 14-time major champion showing flashes of his best golf in finishing tied 11th at the Deutsche Bank Championship yesterday.

Woods, who has struggled with his game since returning from a break to deal with allegations about his private life, has not clinched a major since June 2008.
