Five-time US Open champion Roger Federer beat 13th-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 last night to reach the quarterfinals at a 26th consecutive Grand Slam tournament and set up an intriguing rematch with Robin Soderling.

Number 5 Soderling of Sweden is the man who ended Federer's streak of 23 consecutive Grand Slam semifinals with an upset in this year's French Open quarterfinals.

Soderling advanced earlier by eliminating Number 21 Albert Montanes of Spain 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.

In another quarter final match up, Number 3 Novak Djokovic will play Number 17 Gael Monfils. Djokovic dispatched Number 19 Mardy Fish 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 to leave only one American man in the draw, Number 20 Sam Querrey.

Querrey plays Number 25 Stanislas Wawrinka today in a quarter of the draw that doesn't have a top-10 seed left.

In the featured women's match, Number 1 Caroline Wozniacki defeated Number 14 Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-4 in a match that saw Sharapova commit 36 unforced errors to only 10 from Wozniacki.

Next, Wozniacki plays unseeded Dominika Cibulkova, who defeated Number 11 Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-5, 7-6. The bottom half of that side of the bracket pits Number 31 Kaia Kanepi against Number 7 Vera Zvonareva.

The other side of the women's draw is tougher. In quarterfinals today, it will be Number 2 Kim Clijsters, the defending champion, against Number 5 Sam Stosur, and Number 3 Venus Williams against Number 6 Francesca Schiavone.
