Federer beats Soderling to reach US semifinals
Five-time champion Roger Federer produced a stunning display to beat fifth seed Robin Soderling and reach the semi-finals of the US Open.
The 29-year-old Swiss came through 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 in the night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium as both men defied windy conditions in a high-quality match.
He goes on to face Novak Djokovic after the Serbian earlier beat Gael Monfils 7-6, 6-1, 6-2.
The other men's semifinal will be set up today when top-seeded Rafael Nadal plays Spanish compatriot Fernando Verdasco, and Mikhail Youzhny faces Stanislas Wawrinka.
In the women’s draw, top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki stretched her winning streak to 13 matches by beating 45th-ranked Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 6-2, 7-5,
Wozniacki, the 2009 runner-up at Flushing Meadows, will face Number 7 Vera Zvonareva in tomorrow’s semifinals. Zvonareva was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Number 31 Kaia Kanepi.
The first women's semifinal was set up on Tuesday, when a pair of two-time winners at Flushing Meadows, Number 2 Kim Clijsters and Number 3 Venus Williams, each won.
