Foreign Minister defends Ambassador

Visiting Taiwanese Foreign Minister, Timothy Yang, has defended his country’s Ambassador, Tom Chou, amid claims by the main opposition St Lucia Labour Party (SLP) that the diplomat is meddling in the internal affairs of the country.

Yang insists that the diplomat is not an agent of the ruling United Workers Party (UWP) as was suggested by the Opposition.

He says his country operates on a government to government basis in order that aid will benefit the entire population.

St Lucia established diplomatic relations with Taiwan three years ago after the UWP won the last general election.

The island had previously enjoyed diplomatic relationship with China under the SLP government.

Beijing regards Taiwan as a renegade province and has been urging countries to adopt the One China policy in foreign relations.
