Health officials in the Dominican Republic are investigating the recent deaths of 16 newborns in the capital's largest maternity hospital.

The president of the Dominican Medical Association told the Associated Press that a panel investigating the deaths found evidence of contamination in sections of the Our Lady of High Grace Hospital.

However, he declined to provide further details and said the investigation was ongoing.

The 16 infants died within a week in late August at the hospital.

Officials at the Our Lady of High Grace in the Dominican Republic say there are on average 35 births a day at the facility.
