Bread prices increase

St. Lucians will begin paying more for bread effective today.



According to the St. Lucian Bakers Association bakers could no longer operate profitably without an increase.



Association President, Sylvia Cadasse, said bakers have decided to raise the price of five types of bread.



The Association had given trade officials up to the end of May to help determine an increase in the price of controlled bread, the first in two decades.



Cadasse said there had been no response from the government and bakers have made the decision to announce the increase.



He also said if the price of flour rises as expected in July, the Association will have to implement another increase to off-set that cost.
