Authorities in Grenada say they have taken action to prevent further gas leaks in a small community where 18 people had to be treated for exposure to concentrated chlorine gas.

Following close to 12 hours of excavation work at the Telescope area in Grenville, St. Andrew, the National Water and Sewerage Authority located and safely removed three chlorine cylinders which were buried in the area over 23 years ago.

The cylinders, one of which was faulty prior to burial, were taken in a secured vehicle to one of the company's water treatment sites, away from human settlement.

Meanwhile, residents who were evacuated following the leak have been given permission to return home.
