WICB director favours move towards women’s contract
West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) director Baldath Mahabir has endorsed the Board’s move to implement women’s retainer contracts, describing it as a positive step for the development of the game in the region.
Mahabir, also the Trinidad and Tobago cricket president, says the women’s game had been growing rapidly and needed to be brought in line with the more celebrated men’s game.
Mahabir says the women cricketers have shown that they are catching up with the rest of the world and this retainer will only serve to assist them to develop a lot quicker and close the gap faster.
The WICB announced yesterday that the issuing of women’s retainer contracts would be on the agenda for their three-day meeting starting today in Barbados.
The Board’s move comes on the heels of the women’s squad departure for South Africa for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Challenge where they will meet Pakistan, Ireland, The Netherlands, Sri Lanka and South Africa in a series of 20/20s and one-matches starting next Wednesday.
