Caribbean Airlines executive pitch for single regional airline

The chief executive officer of Caribbean Airlines (CAL) is recommending that the Antigua-based LIAT should seriously consider amalgamation with the Trinidad-based carrier if it hopes to survive current challenges.

According to Captain Ian Brunton, individual airlines in the Caribbean are too small to attain critical mass.

He says while Caribbean Airlines and LIAT have already had preliminary talks it’s too early to say what the likely outcome of discussions would be.

Captain Brunton says futher talks between the two airlines were delayed because CAL’s management had been occupied with the Air Jamaica deal and the absence of a board of directors since the change of government in Port-of-Spain.

Meanwhile, he says Caribbean Airlines is holding talks with the Government of Antigua in order to provide airlift for that island.
