Jamaica defeat Malawi in Commonwealth Games

Jamaica defeated Malawi 71-48 to record their second straight victory in the netball competition on today’s second day of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India.



Goalshooter Jhanielle Fowler led the Sunshine Girls with a game-high 44 goals from 50 attempts.



Captain Simone Forbes scored nine from 10 attempts, goal attack Anna-Kay Griffiths had four from four attempts and goalshooter Romelda Aikens scored two from two.



For Malawi goalshooter Mwayi Kumwenda scored 29 from 35.



In the other Pool ‘A’ game, world champions Australia outclassed hosts India 113-18.



In Pool ‘B’, England defeated South Africa 54-36 and New Zealand hammered Cook Islands 87-24.



Meanwhile, swimmer Alia Atkinson failed in her big to win Jamaica’s first medal at the Games. The Olympian ended eighth and last in the women’s 50-metre breaststroke final in a time of 32.48 seconds.



Leiston Pickett won the gold medal in 30.84 and her Australian teammate Leisel Jones took silver in 31.10. Kate Haywood of England won bronze in 31.17.



Later in the day, Jamaica’s Alexia Royal-Eatmon failed to get out of the first round of the women’s 100-metre backstroke. She finished seventh in Heat Four in one minute 08.67 seconds.



In the boxing competition, Jamaica’s Philip Bowes got his medal campaign off to a flying start. He scored a 5-1 points victory over Indrajith Rajapaksha of Sri Lanka in the light welterweight 64 kilos men’s bout.



The other Jamaican boxer, Jovan Youn is scheduled to meet Fairus Mohd of Malaysia later in the middleweight 75 kilos men’s bout.



Jamaica are taking part in nine disciplines at the games, track and field, badminton, boxing, cycling, netball, shooting, squash, swimming and table tennis.
