New Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission board named
Sports Minister Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange has announced the new members of the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission.
The new commission, to be chaired by Alexander Williams, has been approved by the Cabinet and will serve for a period of three years with effect from October 4, 2010.
President of the Jamaica Olympic Association, Mike Fennell, is deputy chairman.
Also included on the new board are Mayor of Spanish Town, Dr Andrew Wheatley and director of emergency disaster management and special services in the Ministry of Health, Dr Marion Bullock-Ducasse.
The remaining members of the new board are Joan Brown, Alveta Knight, Peter Chin, Professor Rainford Wilks, Ali McNab, Drum Drummond and Dr Kanchana Bandana.
The new board was announced some two months after Minister Grange dissolved the board of directors of the previous board, after a review found potential conflicts of interests.
A delegation from the World Anti-Doping Agency that visited Jamaica in May raised concerns about conflicts of interest for panel members who also lead sports associations in the country.
The government established the anti-doping commission in 2005, recruiting some of the country's leading sports officials to lead testing of athletes for banned substances.
