Three Jamaicans add to medal tally in Commonwealth Games
Sprinter Lansford Spence, Sheree Francis and Nickiesha Wilson improved Jamaica’s medal tally to six on day seven of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.
Spence won silver in the 200-metre final, Francis also secured a silver, this in the women’s high jump while Wilson won bronze in the women’s 400-metre hurdles.
Spence after clocking 20.54 seconds for third in his semi-final, returned later to post a personal-best 20.49 seconds for second place in the final.
The event was won by England’s Leon Baptiste in 20.24 seconds with Christian Malcolm of Wales finishing third in 20.52 seconds.
Francis, who was clearly suffering from severe pain, ¬ grimacing and clutching her hamstring after clearing her second height ¬ eventually finished second after clearing 1.88 metres.
Canadian Nicole Forrester cleared 1.91 metres for the gold medal.
Wilson added her medal in the women’s 400 metre hurdles, running 56.06 to finish behind Nigeria’s Muizat Odumosu 55.28 and Scotland’s Eilidh Child 55.62.
The island’s medal count now stands at six including two gold, three silver, one bronze, good enough for 13th in the overall medal table.
Australia, 136, India, 73, England, 103, Canada, 51 are the top four teams at this point.
