Cuba abolishes equal pay for all

Cuba’s Deputy Labour Minister, Carlos Mateu has announced his government’s decision to abolish equal pay for all.

He said workers will be offered salaries with no pre-determined ceiling and bonuses are also to be made available.

The decision is another in a series of measures introduced by President Raul Castro since he assumed power of the Spanish-speaking island in February.

President Castro said egalitarianism is no longer convenient, and wage differentiation should be seen as a tool to improve production and services.

The concept of equal pay had been in place since the revolution of 1959.
