Cholera slowing down in Haiti

The United Nations has confirmed that the spread of the cholera outbreak in rural Haiti is beginning to slow down.

It has also confirmed the rural Artibonite river as the source of the infection.

The number of deaths from the illness has however risen to 284.

Efforts to contain the spread are the top priority for humanitarian agencies.

They’re trying to prevent the epidemic from reaching camps housing up to a million people left homeless by the massive earthquake in January.

Health officials say the water-borne illness will likely now re-establish its presence in impoverished Haiti after a long absence.
