The number of people known to have died from cholera in Haiti has risen sharply.

Health officials say more than 100 people have died since Saturday, bringing the total to 442.

They have also warned of a 40 percent jump in the number of new cases.

On Monday, the US Centres for Disease Control found that the Haitian patients had all been infected with the same strain of cholera.

The strain is one of the most commonly found in South Asia.

Haitians have blamed the cholera outbreak on persons from South Asian countries.
