Barbuda in darkness

The state-owned Antigua Public Utilities Authority says it is moving to restore electricity to Barbuda after a mechanical failure at the island\'s power station plunged the tiny island into darkness.

Residents have been without electricity since Saturday and a statement issued by the utilities authority said a replacement generator had arrived by barge yesterday and a team of technicians was working on installing the new equipment.

Minister responsible for Barbuda Affairs Trevor Walker said he’s dissatisfied with the situation.

The power outage has also reportedly affected the provision of water to residents, but has not halted operations at the Codrington Airport which has its own power supply.
