Antigua opposition calls for fresh elections

Antigua’s Opposition Leader (ALP) Lester Bird, has challenged Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer to call fresh elections.

According to Bird, Prime Minister Spencer’s United Progressive Party government has no mandate to carry out some of the measures it has implemented.

Bird says these include the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.

The Opposition leader says if Spencer believes the IMF programme has the support of the people, he should not be afraid to call fresh elections to give him an undisputed mandate.

Bird has also repeated calls for the release of the report submitted by a tribunal that investigated the conduct of three suspended members of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission.

He said it was outrageous that three weeks after receiving the report, Governor General Dame Louise Lake-Tack had not yet released it.
