Haitian authorities are reporting that the three-week old cholera epidemic is spreading quickly in the northwest coastal city of Gonaives.

The mayor of Gonaives, Pierrelus St-Justin, is appealing for help for his community.

According to the mayor over the past week at least 70 people have been buried in the downtown area of the city, the hospitals are full and local authorities overwhelmed.

In the Haitian capital, doctors who are working around the clock say they are alarmed by the speed at which cases are emerging in Port au Prince.

Dr. Joia Mukherjee of the US group, Partners in Health, says the poor sanitary conditions have made the earthquake relocation camps ripe ground for the epidemic to take hold.
