The US government is to send the first portion of reconstruction money to Haiti.
More than seven months after the funds were promised, US officials say in the next few days, the American government will transfer US$120 million of the total amount pledged to the World Bank-run Haiti Reconstruction Fund.
This first batch of funding represents about one-tenth of the US pledge.
A State Department aide said money destined for the fund would go towards rubble removal, housing, and a partial credit guarantee fund.
Some of the money will also be used to support an Inter-American Development Bank education reform plan, and budget support for the Haitian government.
