Tivoli Gardens capture Premiership lead

Tivoli Gardens have climbed to the top the 2010-2011 Digicel Premier League table after hammering promoted Benfica 5-0 at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex last night.



As a result of the win, Tivoli have joined long-time leaders Waterhouse on 25 points, but overall has surged ahead on goal difference.



The result, which signals a good start for Tivoli Gardens to the second round, came a week after they whipped Waterhouse 5-1 to win the end-of-the-first-round final.



Devon Hodges led the way for Tivoli with a double strike. He scored in the first and 44th minutes. Kwame Richardson in the 21st, Jameel Thompson the 39th and Kaemmar Daley in the 70th minute provided the other goals.



Waterhouse, who entered the day with a three-point lead, were beaten 1-0 by visitors Sporting Central Academy at Drewsland. Javonni Williams scored a late goal to give the Clarendon-based outfit the victory.



Former champions Portmore United moved to third place on goal difference after a 2-1 win over Reno at Ferdie Neita Park, while Boys Town slipped to fourth after suffering a 1-0 defeat to St Georges, under new coach Geoffery Maxwell. That game was played at Lynch Park in Portland.



In other games: defending champions Harbour View and Humble Lion battled to a 1-1 draw at the Effortville Community Centre in Clarendon, while Arnett Gardens, courtesy of a Fabian Dawkins’ 90th minute strike, edged Village United 1-0 at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex in Kingston.
