Sri Lanka, West Indies draw

The rain-affected first Test between Sri Lanka and West Indies at the Galle International Stadium ended in a draw today with the hosts on 241 for 4 in their second innings, ahead by 39 runs.



With 59.2 overs bowled in the day, Sri Lanka had probably done enough when a terminal shower hit just before tea.



Opening batsman Tharanga Paranavitana was out for 95, one of four batsmen dismissed on the final day, after Sri Lanka had resumed on 89 without loss.



Mahela Jayawardene 58 gave support after the loss of two early wickets courtesy of an electric spell from Kemar Roach in the morning session.



Showing real pace, Roach sent Tillakaratne Dilshan's off-stump flying with a fiery yorker after the batsman had added just 10 runs to his overnight 44.



He had Kumar Sangakkara caught by captain Darren Sammy for four as Sri Lanka reached 159 for two at the interval.



The result means that West Indies are still seeking their first Test victory in Sri Lanka.



West Indies declared their first innings at 580 for nine on the second day with Chris Gayle scoring a Test-best 333, his second triple century.



Final scores in the match are West Indies 580 for nine declared,Sri Lanka 378 and 241 for four.



The second Test of the three-match series will take place at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, starting on Tuesday.
