United States says report confirms North Korea enriching uranium

The United States says a report disclosing that North Korea has built a new nuclear facility is further evidence of Pyongyang's "belligerent behaviour".

The top US military officer, Admiral Mike Mullen, says the report confirms US concerns that North Korea has been enriching uranium, although the country has continually denied those allegations.

He says North Korea is continuing on a path which is destabilising for the region.

A US scientist says he has been shown more than 1,000 centrifuges for enriching uranium on a visit to North Korea.

Enriched uranium can be used for nuclear fuel or may be made into weapons.

North Korea said in September that it was in the final stage of uranium enrichment, and warned that it was continuing to reprocess and weaponise plutonium.
