Sugar stoppage over pay dispute

Talks are expected to take place this week to try and end a one-week strike by sugar workers in Guyana.

The sugar workers union announced the stoppage on Friday to press for pay increases.

The state run company, Guysuco, is offering production incentives instead.

Union boss, Komal Chand, says while he is aware that a strike of such length would be damaging, the workers felt they had no alternative.
