The Assistant Secretary General of the Organisation of American States (OAS) Albert R. Ramdin, wants the international community to do more to address the immediate needs of Haiti ahead of presidential and legislative elections on Sunday, November 28.

The high ranking OAS official has also reaffirmed his conviction that free and fair elections can and should take place as planned.

In light of the sensitive security situation in the country and the current efforts to contain the cholera outbreak, Ramdin says it’s clear that the short-term and immediate needs of the Haitian people are great.

He also says while the circumstances are not ideal, the elections are expected to provide a framework for political certainty, and the long term planning needed for the reconstruction of the country.

Ramdin is due in Haiti tomorrow to support to the work of the OAS/CARICOM Joint Electoral Observation Mission.

Approximately 120 observers are scheduled to visit a total of 4,500 polling sites in approximately 600 polling centres.
