MWAG condemns Prime Minister’s statements
The Media Workers Association of Grenada (MWAG) has condemned public statements by Prime Minister Tillman Thomas in relation to recent online commentaries by local journalist Hamlet Mark.
Thomas has accused Mark of slandering the country in the regional and international media after Mark claimed that Grenada’s “democracy was effectively hijacked and nobody was a word.”
The MWAG says the Prime Minister’s statements could be interpreted as reckless and careless and called on Thomas to withdraw his comments and guarantee the safety of Mark.
The group says while Thomas should also restate his commitment to press freedom. It says while Thomas has a right to defend his government publicly, his comments could intimidate and by extension inhibit the work of journalists in Grenada.
The MWAG says Mark’s articles were in the best traditions of commentaries, using a modern form of media. The journalist association adds that it does not believe Mark’s comments were intended to create instability.
