Two police officers in Puerto Rico have been convicted of drug trafficking and firearms charges.

The US Attorney in San Juan said the convictions demonstrate a commitment to eradicating corruption in law enforcement ranks.

In one drug transaction, the defendants, Raquel Delgado-Marrero and Angel Rivera-Claudio provided armed protection to a drug dealer during the sale of seven kilos of cocaine.

In exchange, the officers received $2,000 each.

They now face up to 15 years in jail when they are sentenced in March.
