Swedish officials investigate Stockholm bombing

Officials in Sweden are investigating a suspected terrorist attack in the capital Stockholm yesterday.

A car blew up in a busy shopping area on Saturday afternoon. Another explosion nearby occurred nearby. Two people were injured.

Persons claiming to have witnessed the explosions say a man found dead, after the second blast, was carrying an explosive device.

Police are sifting through an e-mail sent shortly before the blasts threatening attacks because of Sweden’s involvement in the Afghanistan war.

Sweden deployed about 500 soldiers to Afghanistan as part of the international military force.

Police are investigating whether the explosions were an isolated attack or part of a larger conspiracy.

The e-mail, which was sent to the country’s security service and the TT news agency, calls “mujahideen” or Islamist fighters to rise up in Sweden and Europe. The email also states that Swedes would “die like our brothers and sisters”.

It chides the country for caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad drawn by Swedish artist Lars Vilks.

Swedish Prime Minister, Fredrik Reinfeldt, has condemned the attacks. He says such attacks are unacceptable in an open society with a functioning democracy that respects different cultures.
