Churches call on NNP to sign code of conduct

The Conference of Churches of Grenada said the governing New National Party (NNP) should sign the political code of conduct, crafted by civic groups, instead of an alternative the party had submitted for review.

Head of the umbrella body for religious groups, Bishop Vincent Darius, said at a meeting that the membership reviewed the alternative code of conduct submitted by the NNP and found that it was similar to the existing code.

The NNP, which is led by Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell, had expressed concern about the monitoring and management of the code.

Opposition political parties last week signed the code but the NNP, which is seeking a fourth straight term in office, refused to sign on the basis that the civil society groups, which penned the document, were anti-government.
