Election candidates seek to withdraw
Electoral officials in Grenada have confirmed that two persons are seeking to have their names removed from the list of candidates to contest the July 8 general elections in that country.
Supervisor of Election, Nordica McIntyre, said Kent Joseph and David Lambert had submitted letters seeking to have their names withdrawn.
Last Wednesday, 47 persons representing six political parties, had been nominated to contest the election, in which the ruling New National Party (NNP), of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell is hoping to win an unprecedented fourth consecutive term.
Joseph and Lambert had been nominated to contest the elections as independent candidates.
This was part of a strategy by the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to ensure that the party would be represented in two constituencies, where the official candidates might have been forced to withdraw.
The NDC claimed that the legal advisor to Cabinet, Hugh Wildman, had indicated there would be a challenge to Peter David and Nazim Burke, because of their Canadian citizenship.
