The Bahamas government is defending plans to sell a majority share in the state-owned telecommunications company BTC to Cable and Wireless.

Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham says the economies of scale and the purchasing power of the British company will give strong support to BTC.

The sale, expected to cost $210 million is expected to be finalised in the new year.

Hundreds of telecoms workers this week staged a protest march in Nassau against the sale.
