Wikileaks’ Assange says the US fears losing face

Julian Assange the founder of whistle blowing website Wikileaks has accused the United States of aggressively and illegally investigating him and his site.

Wikileaks has published hundreds of sensitive American diplomatic cables, details of which have appeared in the Guardian in the UK and several other newspapers around the world.

Assange is now on bail in London awaiting extradition proceedings to Sweden on sex allegations.

He argues that the allegations against him are politically motivated and designed to take attention away from the material appearing on Wikileaks.

According to the 39-year-old, many people have faced embarrassment because of the case while some are simply seeking to build their careers.

Assange says he suspects an espionage indictment is being prepared in the US and has condemned the secrecy which surrounded his case.

However, the Australian says Wikileaks is a robust organisation which will continue to publish information.

He says it has so far published only 2,000 out of the 250,000 cables.
