Alia Atkinson fails to medal

Jamaica’s swimming sensation Alia Atkinson just missed out on qualifying for her second final at the 10th FINA World Swimming Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates today.



Twenty-four hours after the Jamaican Olympian failed to win her first medal at the World Championship level, she clocked the ninth fastest time in today’s 100-metre breaststroke semi-final to miss tomorrow’s final.



Atkinson clocked one-minute 06.05 seconds in her semi-final heat. She qualified for the semi-final earlier in the day after easily won her heat in a one-minute 06.77 seconds, a slower time than the semi-final.



American Rebecca Soni advanced to the final with the fastest qualifying time of one-minute 04.17 seconds, a championship record.



Jamaica’s other swimmer Victoria Hoo did not progress out of the first round of the women’s 400-metre freestyle. She clocked four minutes 27.08 seconds to finish 36th.



Both swimmers will be in action on tomorrow’s final day.
