OAS to increase observers for election

The Organisation of American States (OAS) has announced that it will significantly increase the number of observers arriving in St. George’s this week ahead of the July 8 general election.

Assistant Secretary General Ambassador, Albert Ramdin, said about 30 OAS election observers will be on the ground compared to eight, which monitored the country’s last poll in 2003.

Ambassador Ramdin said the OAS’s decision to increase the number of election observers in Grenada, was based on the contentious nature of the upcoming poll.

A charged campaign, fuelled by political barbs from rival candidates, has been marked by reports of confrontations among rival supporters, the tearing down of political posters, and the slashing of the tyres of vehicles of known political opponents.

Ramdin said he intents to have in each of the 15 constituencies at least two persons observing the elections.
