The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says it has reached an understanding with St Lucia to offer the island $8 million in emergency hurricane relief.

In October, St Lucia was hard hit by Hurricane Tomas.

In a release the IMF said the financing will be formally considered by the Fund's board next month.

It also said the agreement could help St Lucia in mobilizing financial support from other international and regional financial institutions.

Torrential rains from hurricane Tomas caused landslides, resulting in deaths and severe damage to road and water supply infrastructure, as well as agriculture.
