The Montserrat government says the country will only be able to sign the treaty establishing the Economic Union of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) after it gets the full approval of the British government.

Chief Minister Reuben Meade says his administration would seek to ensure that the Bill for the Economic Union treaty is debated in the Legislature as soon as possible.

Meade also said the Director

of the Regional Affairs Secretariat in the Office of the Chief Minister will hold public consultations on the economic union.

Despite being a founding member of the sub-regional grouping, Montserrat has not yet been able to join the six other countries in signing the treaty establishing the union that is expected to come into operation next year.
